Foundations of mUsic
In this first module of our 3 part series, we’ll lay the groundwork for a deeper study of the harmonium and music theory (western) within the context of devotional music, primarily kirtan. You will learn the essential principles of melody, harmony, and rhythm and how they apply to keyboard instruments and western music in general. You will also gain more skills specifically for harmonium playing.
To participate, you do not need to have any experience with music theory - just a basic understanding of how to play the harmonium and be able to identify the keys on the keyboard by letter name (western).
We will cover: major scales, major keys, major and minor chords, chord inversions and specific voicings for harmonium, and exercises for developing more dexterity on the keyboard. You will be given homework assignments each week and will be encouraged to spend time studying and practicing in between classes.
This is a hybrid course with live online classes, plus pre-recorded content. This class is not only educational but also provides an opportunity to build community and make connections with others.
One private, 30-minute coaching session with Seth is included in this course, to be scheduled on your own time. The session must take place before the course is over, and after it has begun.
