Chant Writing for Harmonium

Description

In this course—the final module of the Complete Harmonium Player series—you will take your understanding of music theory to the next level by learning how to write your own music within the context of devotional music, primarily kirtan.

This course follows a hybrid model, combining live, interactive classes with guided practice and assignments in between sessions.

We will explore how melodies are composed, how chords support a melodic line, and how to create your own original melodies with harmonium chordal accompaniment. Our work will culminate in a final presentation in which you write your own melody, set it to words of your choice, and add harmonium accompaniment.

In this course, we will cover:

  • How melodies are created

  • How melody and harmony work together

  • How text and music align

  • How to create your own melody with accompanying chords and words

You will be given weekly homework assignments and encouraged to spend time studying and practicing in between classes.

Classes take place live on Zoom in a fun, interactive learning environment where students are invited to participate, ask questions, and connect with one another. In addition to musical education, this course also offers an opportunity to build community and make meaningful connections with others.

One private 30-minute coaching session with Seth is included and may be scheduled at your convenience. This session must take place after the course begins and before it concludes.
